    60 4spd shifting problem

I'm having issues setting up my shifter and was wondering if anyone could help. The transmission is a 62? T-10 that is supposed to have been rebuilt. It looks clean and has been recently apart so I'll assume that it is. The shifter is a Hurst shifter(sorry but that's all I know about it).

The issue I have is that doesn't always go into 2nd and will sometimes partially go in only to pop out when I let out the clutch unless I "mis-rig" the shifter.

Here is how I've tried to set it up... With the shift rods dissconnected I put the shifter in neutral(easily moves left and right). Then I make sure the 1-2 and 3-4 shift levers on the side case are in their detents so they are neutral and then I adjust the rods so that they connect to the shift levers with no binding. With this set-up 2nd gear is pretty much impossible to get into on the road and if it does it will usually pop out once I release the clutch.

Now, if I "mis-rig the shifter so that it pushes the 1-2 shift lever closer towards 2nd it will stay in 2nd when shifted into 2nd on the road. The problem then is that when the shifter is in neutral it no longer moves easliy left and right. In fact it slightly binds and it seems like if I'm shifting from say 3 or 4 to 1 or 2 that I'll have to push the shifter forward slightly as I'm moving it over or it won't go into the 1-2 slot.

I suppose the easy fix is to get the correct Corvette shifter but I'm trying to keep my costs down so I'd like to make this shifter work. I think Hurst makes good shifters so there must be something I'm doing wrong or maybe some mis-matched parts.... I really don't know so any help here would be appreciated.

Did you try going to Hurst's web site? You can download instruction sheets, compare part numbers and they have an excellant tech support telephone line. I always try to go to the source first, after all it is their product and most companies want satified users.

      Greg,
The good news is that it sounds like you did it right. Linkage usually has a hole to insert a rod or some way to insure neutral so you can do what you did. If thats what you did prior to your adjustment then expect the bad news.

The bad news is that it could be your 2nd gear syncro. 2nd gear was usually the one that got banged the most.

Your pop out is a symptom of a bad syncro. unfortunatly the gear is part of the syncro and if so you will have to change it with the syncro.

You can see the dog house (part of the syncro) on the gear with the side cover off. A trained eye can spot the problem. If yo run out of options and pull the cover then a good picture will spark comments.

        Thanks guys.

Terry, I never even thought of contacting Hurst so I'll do that for sure. For what it's worth I never bought the shifter, it came with the car and it could be some 20-30 years old to boot!

Dom, What gets me is when I "mis-rig" it then 2nd gear is no problem and it stays in, no problem. It's almost like it isn't being pushed enough for 2nd when it's rigged "properly" and pops out. I don't have much experience setting up 4 spd shifters but I did set-up the original Muncie shifter in my brother 67 Camaro and it did have a rig pin slot so this Hurst shifter must have something like that too? I'll check their site tonight.

          Greg,

I hear what your saying about the mis-rig but we used to hold it in the gear by hand when the synco was getting bad and that may be what the mis-rig is doing.

I hope you get it resolved without a tear down.
