I'm having issues setting up my shifter and was wondering if anyone could help. The transmission is a 62? T-10 that is supposed to have been rebuilt. It looks clean and has been recently apart so I'll assume that it is. The shifter is a Hurst shifter(sorry but that's all I know about it).
The issue I have is that doesn't always go into 2nd and will sometimes partially go in only to pop out when I let out the clutch unless I "mis-rig" the shifter.
Here is how I've tried to set it up... With the shift rods dissconnected I put the shifter in neutral(easily moves left and right). Then I make sure the 1-2 and 3-4 shift levers on the side case are in their detents so they are neutral and then I adjust the rods so that they connect to the shift levers with no binding. With this set-up 2nd gear is pretty much impossible to get into on the road and if it does it will usually pop out once I release the clutch.
Now, if I "mis-rig the shifter so that it pushes the 1-2 shift lever closer towards 2nd it will stay in 2nd when shifted into 2nd on the road. The problem then is that when the shifter is in neutral it no longer moves easliy left and right. In fact it slightly binds and it seems like if I'm shifting from say 3 or 4 to 1 or 2 that I'll have to push the shifter forward slightly as I'm moving it over or it won't go into the 1-2 slot.
I suppose the easy fix is to get the correct Corvette shifter but I'm trying to keep my costs down so I'd like to make this shifter work. I think Hurst makes good shifters so there must be something I'm doing wrong or maybe some mis-matched parts.... I really don't know so any help here would be appreciated.
