    Stu Fox/Ethanol fuel

    Stu,

    Thinking back about a discussion that we had here a few years ago about carburetor fuel boil/evaporation etc, I immediately thought of you. I remember the issues that you and others had with ethanol. I had the same issues. The list of problems/issues caused by ethanol is long.

    Last week, I purchased (locally) about 10 gallons of ethanol free 93 octane gasoline. (also known as boat gas) I'm happy to report that all of the issues that I had are no longer issues.
    My carburetor now remains full after a hot shut down. (no more boil off) The idle is stable. There is no longer a strong odor of gasoline in my garage and no more issues on hot restarts.
    I learned that ethanol free fuel is much more available than I thought. In fact, the station that I found, thanks to one of our members, Bob Birchmeier, is less than a mile from my home. Cost about $4.30/gal.
    I highly recommend giving this stuff a try if you can find a station that sells it near you.
    The link below shows locations around the country that sell it but I'm sure there are many more. Just select a state. I'm sure you will be impressed.

    Pure-gas.org is the definitive web site listing stations that sell pure gasoline in the U.S. and Canada.

    Great find Michael,

    Also your accelerator pump and fuel pump diaphragm will thank you.

    Check out the number of stations in Oklahoma compared to some of our western states like where I live...Arizona. Very few and only in very small towns.

    Grrrrr!

      Michael;

      Sure be gone! I do think there may be a few boats around these here parts of central FL. Thanks for the info. I'll check around and let you know the outcome.

      Speaking of fuel, I'm awaiting your response to my PM.

      Thanks again;

      Stu Fox

        I have used "boat gas" and my 66 327/350 loves it easy starting when hot. Ethanol gas breaks down and looses octane rating with age, not the "boat gas. I've found the real gas also at oil supply company nearby, about three weeks ago paid $3.86 a gallon

            Thanks Mike,
            That is a nice site...too bad that in the Illinois and Wisconsin areas, there are none remotely close to either Chicago or Milwaukee corridors.

            By the time you drive to one, you've used a good part of the tank.

              When you say "boat gas" would that infer that marinas are more likely to have ethanol free gasoline? If so that would explain why there is a limited number of ethanol free gasoline stations listed in http://pure-gas.org/. Marinas aren't considered as run-of-the-mill gasoline stations. I wonder if there is a Web site listing marinas with ethanol free gasoline?

                Is fuel containing no ethanol and non oxygenated fuel the same thing?

                  I called the place that has the 93 Octane non-ethanol "marine gas" today in Saint Cloud, Florida. It is actually on the highway that leads west to Old Town (winter meet). They told me they have a special pump along side their shop (auto repair) and they read to me the Florida State Statute as to who qualifies to purchase including boats, motorcycles, mopeds, gas containers and of course autos older than 1984. One can just pull right up at the pump like a normal service station, get them to clear you in order to turn on the pump, and go for it. They said they pump a lot and get a re-supply from a tanker nearly every week.

                  I told them I'd see them soon and didn't even think to ask the price. I figured if you got to ask, well then you can't afford the pleasure of good performance and getting your wife off your back about the stinky garage.

                  p.s. Thanks again to Michael for the heads up.

                    Stu,

                    My old house had a "tuck under" garage in the basement. It had lots of "access" holes that allowed air from the garage to get into the rest of the house. When I parked my 66 L72 (427 / 425) in there, it would stink up the whole house. My wife has asthma, so she was not pleased at all with the situation. So I sealed up the holes in the drywall. Then I set up an exhaust fan that came on when the garage door light came on (every time the door went up or down). The air was exhausted through a hose to the outside through a window pane that I replaced with sheet metal.

                    Unfortunately, I had to rebuild the engine and we moved, so I never got a chance to see how well it worked. But I suspect it would have at least made the situation better.

                    Joe

                      I have been going to Watkins in Titusville. Eat at Dixie Crossroads and then pump 89 93 pure or even 100LL.
