    AO Smith

We just got a new water heater and it was made by AO Smith. Is this the same AO Smith that made the Corvette bodies? Do I have a Corvette water heater?

Is it made out of fiberglass?

It may well have fiberglass insulation, so I say it's a Corvette derivative.

Ken, the A. O. Smith water heater you have is from the A. O. Smith Corporation in Alsip, Illinois. The water heaters are made with Corderite Combustion Containment Technology. Not sure but Corderite may be a fancy name for fiberglass.

Yes, it is. They also made millions of truck, passenger car, and Corvette frames; they sold off their automotive divisions many years ago.

Whatever you do, don't add sidepipes or a '67 BB hood.

Didn't AO Smith also make fiberglass parts and do assembly on the Shelby Mustangs from '68 or so?

Yes, they did - the Shelby 500KR's were modified and shipped from the A.O. Smith plant in Ionia, Michigan, and the same plant started making fiberglass panels for Corvettes about the time it was sold to General Tire (GenCorp). They also made C3 doors and several other major body panels.

...and they also make storage silos for farms------A.O. Smith Harvestore.

I believe that A.O. Smith is/was based in Milwaukee, WI and that's where they manufactured many of the automotive frames including all C3 frames.

When growing up, my mom had a Norge washing machine that was made by Borg-Warner. A few years later I bought a 1960 Pontiac Ventura with a T-10 4-speed also made by Borg-Warner.

Along that same line, I once bought a house that had an International Harvester refrigerator.

This is taking a walk, here's more. GM's hydromatic transmission division made M-16s in the 60s.

I worked for AO Smith in Waco Tx in 1968 while in school and we made bombs I think they were MK 117's. Later I got to drop some of them.

The other source for M-16's (besides Colt) was Singer Sewing Machine Co.
