    1966 Ignition Switch

    I see two numbers for 66 ignition switches #1116673 and #1116686. Which is the correct switch for my 66 coupe built on Dec. 15 1965? Thanks for any info.

    Larry, I can only find part # 1116686 which is for 1966-67. Maybe part # 1116673 comes with a coded or uncoded cylinder.

      Larry,

      The correct ignition switch for the 1966 is GM # 1116673 as shown in my 1966 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (effective Oct. 1965) and the 1966 AIM (UPC 6, sheet B4). GM # 1116673 was discontinued in May 1967 as per Chevrolet Parts History and replaced with GM # 1116686 which is original equipment on the 1967. I had 3 NOS 1116673 ignition switches in the last couple of years but I sold them. I might still have a few used "673" switches in my collection but I would have to check. If you want an NOS "673" I could contact the person that bought all 3 of my NOS "673" switches.

        Re: 1966 Ignition Switch

        Toward the end of the mid-year build, the ignition switch changed PN annually in production useage...

        1965 = 1116660
        1966 = 1116673
        1967 = 1116686

        Each new release was downward compatible with the previous switch and sometimes the differences were gossamer. But a few detail aspects ARE checked during PV like the 1967 switch and it's construction feature to thwart the operator from accidentally turning the engine OFF and leaving the car with the switch left in ACC vs. OFF mode.

        You'll find the ignition switch called out in your copy of the AIM, but you have to flip to Section 6 (Engine) instead of Section 12 (Electrical) to find it...
