    Lubricating Speedo cable?

My gauge cluster is out for restoration. Before pulling I noticed that the Speedo cable could be heard at very low speed. What and how is the best way to lubricate it?

I believe that there are some good threads on this topic in the archives... Take a look and see what you can find....

The accepted method as I recall is to use a graphite based liquid lubricant.. There are a couple of brand names mentioned (archives) for this stuff. I did mine not too long ago, found the stuff at a True Value hardware store.. I cleaned the cable with some solvent and then used the graphite based liquid lube. I actually had some powered graphite as well which I mixed with the liquid product. I soaked the entire cable (out of the housing) and put it all back together. The liquid will evaporate leaving the graphite which will in turn keep the cable lubed.

Whatever you do, do not use grease... or anything similar...

I'm sure some of the other guys will chime in.

    Good luck,

    Joel

Use Vaseline to lube the cable. Most "old timers" have been using it for 50+ years with no problems (plus, that's what's recommended by most speedo repair shops).

That's what I used. Don't forget the tach cable! I was thinking I had a problem in the engine of my 65 due to a noise in the tach cable.
