Deb and I will have the pleasure of having Jack as our overnight guest on the 17th before sending him on his way to another Corvette enthusiast's care and custody in Ottawa on the 18th.

Jack- not sure I mentioned it, but I used to summer in Goose Rocks Beach/Kennebunkport area and with family in Cumberland Foreside. Most times our route from your area back home would head along ME-113 to Fryeburg then US 302 to St. Johnsbury. That might be a good place to stop for lunch. From there we used to take Interstates/Autoroutes home but I'd suggest back roads towards the Champlain Islands, cross the border then follow the Richelieu River to Chambly, then to St-Bruno.

Hi Mike,

Looks like a good route. I have lived in North Conway for 8 years and Hanover NH for 10 years , so I am familiar with the routes. I once delivered a boat to Plattsburgh NY, by taking the ferry north of Burlington VT.

I think I will take it. Hope to get car all set over the next few weeks.

Still having windshield installation problems. No one in Maine (shops ) are familiar with it. It is an insurance case, rock hit window

Maybe I can get it done while in MI for convention

Anybody know of a shop on my way or in the Novi area that can do the job on Thursday or Friday 20, 21 st of July while I am not driving.

I pulled the distributor

Hi,

As some may know , I am having a timing and missing problem with my L79 66

I have owned the car since 1970 and it needed a new distributor in 1971

Dealer installed a replacement #1112020 , a sb 300hp 350 ci 1970 corvette distributor. date 4 0 15

Took it out and found that the lower bushing was shot and the main shaft worn in that area.

Vendors list a main shaft for base engine and for HP

My L-79 is the hp engine

which shaft should I order and why ? Is the hp performance shaft for FI or TI

How do you get the old bushings out, Zip sells a tool to put them in , but how do you remove them?

There is somewhat of an art to doing it, and the shaft won't really be "correct." Optimally the distributor will have to be recurved for your engine.

Question, what do you mean "correct" is that for judging or for performance. I know I have a replacement 1970 distributor, and I can put in the HP shaft, or the standard one.

Do you mean the shaft is not "correct " or the Distributor from a judging point of view. will Both will work correctly , that is my main concern

Performance point of view. No one sees it when the car is judged.

When one of my cars had the same thing happen I bought the base motor shaft because that's what the car is. The autocam (thing on the top that limits advance) was totally wrong so the distributor had to be recurved to work correctly. I've done this with 2 distirbutors and neither the HP or base shaft was configured correctly, but the gentleman who did the work for me corrected it all so that they work just fine.

Well I only have 9 days left before I leave on my short trip (2,000) miles to Novi, MI .

Distributor is apart, it seems my go to guys (engine builder and distributor men here in Maine) developed amnesia when I asked them about taking out the bushings in my distributor.

Started to panic , and on the ride home, I stopped by Portland Transmission, They have helped me in the past with my M-20 rebuild.

I walked in with my distributor in a greasy white towel and the guy behind the counter said " You are going to have a mad wife "

I showed him what was in the towel and asked if he could help me.

He looked at the bushing, went in the back and came out 3 mins. later.

Said he was sorry that it took so long, "seems that the bushing was in there for a long time " and gave me back my distributor , bushing out.

I asked him how much and he said " Buy your wife a new towel "

Just goes to show you that, sometimes, most of the time people are great.

Parts come today and I hope I can put the distributor back in and have the car start

I'm just curious, are your new bushings already machined to the correct inner diameter? I remember somewhere that they were supplied in a semi finished condition and needed to be bored slightly once installed.

I have a feeling you are right, but I will know that , when the UPS gets here later today. If they need boring, I will deal with that later today.

Just another case of it wasn't broken, but once you start taking things apart...... you really see 40 some-years of wear on the parts you missed in the first 1,000 hrs of restoration.

It will be OK, I think

In my innocence , I believe my new shaft and bushings that UPS is dropping off later today,

will match perfectly, the shaft will slide effortlessly through both bushings

Right? Or am I going to have to start running around to find someone to line bore the bushings to fit the new shaft?

Parts just came and the shaft and bushings are a perfect fit

What happens when I install them , well that is a different story

If you run into trouble I can ship you a complete points/condensor distributor machined and assembled by ZIP last summer. All parts are new. It has never been installed. No charge of course.

Yes , the bushings fit the shaft before you install them. Once installed, the hole was .002 too small.

What to do ? I jumped in my car, drove to a metal fabrication shop that had helped me in the past, showed him my small hole,

and he honed it out on his honing machine.

Now back home, 1 1/2 hrs later. About to install distributor and see if the car will start....

The car is almost packed. Put the distributor together, greased the tach drive, dropped it in the block, set it to halfway with VC between manifold and coil, locked it down and turned the key.

Car started on first try, put timing light on without vc and it was at 10 advanced, revved it up, without VA topped out at 36 degrees

put on VA , idled at 800 rpm, 25 degrees with can, B26 which I limit to 15 degrees .

Took it out on the road and it ran like a charm.

What is the lesson ? Ask for help, don't be afraid to improvise, look for help locally if you can, follow directions, and be lucky.

I am pleased also. Just want to thank you again for your generous offer. As you may know I will be in the Ottawa area on Monday , July 18th , on my way to Novi.

I am picking up a forum member in the morning, and heading for the capital to sight-see , as I have never been to Ottawa.
