    Pulling 67 Speedo

I read the two articles linked here describing how to get the instrument cluster in and out:

    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showpost...unt=2&uid=3103

A couple of questions--do you have to pull the steering column to do this? I'd prefer not to, because mine's an AC car and I would have to futz with the ducting to take the column out. Plus it seems like a lot of extra work just to protect the steering column from scratches.

In my case, I'm not doing it for a gauge restoration--speedo works and my odometer just quit working, which bugs me. I tried the pulling down and turning the trip meter knob to get the drive gear re-engaged, but not luck. I just want the odo fixed, and truthfully my gauges look nice in their present condition. Lens are clear and cosmetically, the guage faces look good with just normal fading of the yellow zone in the tach. My column's not perfect, and I figure I can protect it sufficiently using painter's tape as needed, if protection is the primary reason to pull the steering column.

Second question: how do you (can you) remove just the speedo/odo when you get the cluster out away from the dash, so I can just send it out for repair?

Third question: I've seen the vendors in driveline--who's done one recently and who would you recommend? I'm in Dallas, and if anyone has a local recommendation that would be good too.

    Thanks.

    Paul,
You can get the cluster out by just lowering the column. No need to remove it. Just have a lot of towels to protect from scratches. I've done it this way a lot of times. Care and caution is necessary.

It is better to remove the steering wheel as access is enhanced greatly.

Paul, it's not that much more work to remove the cluster completely. Just mark each wire with tape & identification. It's pretty hard to get the back cover off with the cluster in place. You have to remove the back cover first, then the then the speedo. The 1/4" hex screws are tricky to remove when in place too.

Florida is not local to Texas but I recommend Bill Harrison here in Jupiter, FL. He just fixed a '67 speedo for me. www.harrisonspeedometer.com
