Re: 70 L46, what type of carb do I have?
I just spoke with the past owner; he replaced the carb in the early 80's. He bought the carb at a Chevy dealer and told me it was the exact number (7040507) carb that he had taken off.
The carb date is 3529. Could it be Dec. 79 instead of Dec. 69?
Were they making NA9 carbs in 79 or was it an overhauled 69 core sitting on the shelf?- Top

Re: 70 L46, what type of carb do I have?
Patrick and Mike-----
I think I may have this figured out. Given that Patrick's carb is SERVICE-dated and Mike's carb is likely also SERVICE-dated, what must have happened is that the 7040507 was used as the SERVICE carb for all 1970 base engine Corvette small block applications. In other words, Rochester did not offer in SERVICE the non-EEC carburetors but, instead, used the EEC carb for all base small block applications. In the non-EEC applications, one or two unused ports would be closed with a cap.
If the above is what happened, and I now strongly suspect it did, the 7040507 was sold under GM #7047006. That was discontinued in May, 1976 and replaced by GM #17051998. The latter was discontinued without supercession in June, 1992. It's very possible that both the 7047006 and the 17051998 included a carburetor with stamped number 7040507.
There are other applications for which GM consolidated carbs for SERVICE, although, usually, the original carbs for all applications were available for, at least, some period of time. In this case, I don't think the non-EEC carbs were available, at all.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
