Actually Scott if one has the shielding in which the box is three pieces -- the top and two separate pieces to form the four sides -- it is not so hard to remove the top and front piece. Most original 1969 and early 1970 distributor shields are this style.

The later box style and most replacements have the front and rear pieces of the box spot welded together and this is substantially more difficult to remove. For most folks this style is the price they pay to have show chrome shielding.

*Groan*. I have the one piece style that I had flash chromed. At the time when I was looking for one I could not find the three piece style. Maybe I will start looking again. Or consider wiring alternatives.

this is what was on my 70 lt-1. it is a june car 12551. i am told that this type distributor cover came out about the same time this car was built. dont know for sure when they started using it but it was sometime late june. if you look at the orange pieces you can see where it was brush painted and it has a little silver paint mixed in.

the piece at the top in the first pic is an unusual piece. most of those you see have a notch at the bottom edge. the length of the notch varies from part to part but you rarely see one with no notch. i looked for this piece for years with no success so i will restore and reuse the one i have.

Keep looking for the 3 piece box. They are still out there. I looked for years for a nice one. Finally at Bloomington this year I found a used service replacemnt that was pretty good. It may take a condition deduct, but the best I had found in years of looking. The search is half the fun.

Scott, don't dash out for the three-piece just yet. I am pretty sure that big blocks changed to the two piece (box and top) during the 1969 model year. I never got a warm fuzzy feeling on my research back in 1990-93 about the change point for big blocks. Small blocks I have down pretty well because the gene pool was purer for them.

There were already too many "restored" large motors in the gene pool back then to be sure. I now know some folks with relatively unmolested late and very late 1969s I will check into. I haven't visited this area for a while, and while I am sure there are fewer unmolested large motor early C3s out there now I have a better data base now.

Now that the Internet is more developed you might also post a new thread about the style of the distributor shielding on here and see what shows up when you pull the large motors out of the mix.

One original 1969, trim tag date Q11 (December 11, 1969 -- about a week before the end of 1969 production), has the three piece distributor shield with two Philips head screws on the passenger side. L71/M40.

Re: Need diagram for early 70 / late 70 ignition shielding?

I'm dragging up this really old thread because I have run into an issue attempting to install the lower screw that holds the two box side sections together on the passenger side. I have an early '69 L36. I'm currently using a nice original 3-piece (front, rear and top sections) distributor/coil box. This probably isn't correct for my early Oct-68 car but I hate working with the '68 style two-piece units.

The problem I'm having is that the lower screw holes on the shield box lineup over the passenger side bracket. Meaning they don't miss the bracket like the upper screw holes so the screw can't be installed without drilling a hole through the bracket. I think the bracket I have is one of the later GM service replacements. Everything else installs and fits perfectly.

Has anyone else run into this problem? I think the possibilities are:

                  1) the ignition shield box is configured different than original
                  2) the brackets are configured different than original
                  3) I've installed something incorrectly

One item of note is that the AIM shows a hole in the bracket at this location so I'm thinking #2 is the answer. Which leaves me with one more question. Did the brackets on cars with the first design two-piece spot welded boxes lack this hole (since it wouldn't have been needed) and the hole was added when the factory went to the three-piece design during the '69 production year?
