Okay, the book states that the day/night button is gray. I have read and have seen in person 1 owner vettes where the nob is black. So which is correct? I will be purchasing a mirror in the not too distant future.
Which is correct for a rear view mirror?

FWIW, my August 1971 built '72 conv has the stainless backed mirror with a GRAY day/night selector. Of course the edging is gray too.
Hope this helps.Don Lowe

I think, but could stand to be corrected, that the later 1972 mirrors with the black back -- have a black knob. So Steve tell us what year your Corvette is and if it is a 1972 tell us when it was built.Terry- Top

Re: Which is correct for a rear view mirror?
Beginning in January 1972, FMVSS regulations required the change from a bright stainless backing (part facing forward) to a molded and grained black plastic back. This eliminated potential sun glare from blinding drivers of oncoming cars in traffic. According the '70-'72 NCRS JG, your car (actually, all Corvettes through the end of calendar 1971) came with the bright, smooth stainless steel backing with a gray rubber molding around the perimeter of the mirror that secured the glass in the casing.
There really should be no mistaking the stainless for the later, black unit.Last edited by Don L.; June 1, 2011, 06:29 AM.Don Lowe
