I have a 64 coupe with factory air. The a/c works fine for about 10 minutes or so after starting the car cold and then it gradually quits cooling. It was converted to 134 a couple of years ago during a complete restoration. I just replaced the expansion valve and that at least got it to blow cold. However, it does not work for more than a few minutes. Anyone have any ideas of what could be going on? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: A/C Problem
Well I guess the question I have is does the compressor still run after it stops cooling?if not does the airflow slow down or does it just go to outside air temp? If it slows down air flow it could be a frozen evaporator..over charged 134 will do this..but a few yes no's..- Top

A local GM mechanic. He knows a lot about a/c. However, he is not a specialist and he is wondering what to do next.- Top

Re: A/C Problem
We used a conversion chart to put in the 134 so I think we got the amount right. I just drove it again and it is leaking some oil or leak detector out of the front of the compressor. Also it's making a whistling noise aroun the evaporator core. When I just drove it the air worked for about two minutes and then quit.- Top
