    1974 454 valve covers

I saw what was presented as a low mileage 1974 - below 30 k yesterday at a local car show. It had what appeared to be chromed valve covers. All my reference materials show painted valve covers. Did any bib blocks leave the factory with chrome covers?

    Thanks,
    Glen

As far as Corvettes go -- the last BB chrome rocker arm cover was 1969.

Thanks Terry. That's what I thought.

        Terry------

1970 was the last year. However, I think some early 1971's also had chrome valve covers.

I strongly suspect some previous owner decided he/she liked chrome valve covers. I strongly doubt that any 1974 Corvette LS-4 was ever built with chrome valve covers. By the way, 1974 big blocks all used a push-in rubber oil fill plug. Did the chrome valve covers you saw have this feature? If so, they are probably original valve covers that someone had chromed. If a twist-lock oil fill cap is used, then they're likely either 68-70 GM SERVICE valve covers or aftermarket.

I shouldn't post before my first cup of coffee.

I've seen a good few '71 LS-5 Survivor type cars that have had the "flash chrome" covers and I always look at the VIN #. Seems like it is almost always in the first 5,000 cars produced or thereabouts.

Just curious; has anybody ever seen a true LS-6 with factory chrome
valve covers? It's got to be super rare.

                  Joe,

It was a twist lock. They did appear to have the flash chrome finish. It was pretty odd for a low mileage car. There were a few more items missing under the hood.

                  thanks,

                  Glen
