69 Hood Seal lenght

What is the correct length of the hood seal. The new one I just purchased seems to be about 5 inches longer then the one I took off. How far up should it go on each side. The original measurement is about 16 inches on each side, Is this correct?
Is there any special way to install it? I doesn't looks symmetrical. If i look at it straight on the hole look oval is this normal for new seals. Should the long edge go on the hood and the shorter section on the support?

Dick,
The correct length varied over time, but the best indicator is your original seal. Is there some reason it doesn't provide answers to your questions?

No, when I read the judging manual it mention check for correct length and I thought there were was a specific length I should look for. As I said the new one looks to be about 5 inches longer so before I cut I wanted to make sure.

I will go measure my 1970, if we can agree on a method. What do you mean by "The original measurement is about 16 inches on each side, Is this correct?" Where are you starting your measurements from?

The dumb thing I did was not to take a picture before I removed the old seal and threw it away. I assumed that the new seal would be the same length. When I laid it out I noticed that it was longer.
Looking closely I can see where the old adhesive ends so I'm using that as my start point. I have attached a photo that shows how I measured. From the hood to a mark on the hood support is 18 5/8" On yours is the seal the same length on each side?

I have no idea if one side is longer than the other because until today I haven't measured it. It is what it is.

DS = 18 7/8-inches
PS - 16 1/2- inches

Not too surprising they would be different since each side was worked by a different person. I don't know if the seal came in and they installed the entire piece or if it was longer and they trimmed it. Either way it is obvious the length down the sides didn't much matter to Chevrolet, so it probably shouldn't to us either.

Thanks Terry, I went looking at some pictures that I had taken at one of the judging classes and found a picture that showed the Driver side and it looks like it is shorter on the drivers side similar to what you measured. I'll have to check out a few cars at the local car show to see what other folks have done.

Hi Richard
Using the same method of measurement as you did. I measured mine and I got 14 1/4 inches. Same length as the other side.
I used an NOS GM weather strip. My old one was just about the same length.

Also is a pic of my late friends 69 original untouched hood weather strip. In the pic you can see it is almost the exact same length as my 68.

I measured mine and its 15 3/4 on the DS and 16 1/4 on the other..12/5/69 build date..original seal..
