    1960 cove spears

The backing plate at the front of the cove into which the front of the spears go should be painted what color? The car is black.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Tom--
Not to be rude, but it should be the color that the JG clearly spells out.

      Mike,

That was the first place I looked. I must have missed it..............

      Time to go look again.

      Thanks,

Thomas, page 39. The spear anchoring strips are painted semi-gloss black.

Mike, not to be rude either, but this response seems far too common here and I don't understand the reason. One side benefit of answering questions is it basically shares knowledge that someone may not have a need to look up now, but may find useful in the future. I've seen a number of questions asked and answered over the years that I would not have looked up, but was glad to know. In my case, I don't have a JG for all of my cars since I don't have any interest in having a majority of 'em judged, and of the JG's that I have bought over the years many are old and have seen changes. In the case of this particular question I learned something from the answer. With a 59 and a 60 now I'm going to look and see if mine are semi-black and I'm pretty sure they're not....... and I'd have never thought to look otherwise. After all, this board is called Technical Discussion. Why not just answer a question that somebody knows off the top of their head instead of tellin' em to go read the book?

            Norris

I kinda side with you on this. A few questions I have asked have been answered as you point out, check the JG or buy one and check it.

I think this type of help comes from the:

Give them a fish and feed them for a day. Teach them to fish and feed them for the rest of their life mentality.

                Re: 1960 cove spears

After many years of storage, I removed them from my car. I found semi gloss black on only the back-side (against the f'glass surface), and paint under the spears on the "showing side" or ousdie. There were traces along the edges, but I wonder if someone got in there with steel wool or something.

By the way, Is there a supplier hold up on reproduction side spears? Paragon told me that had and "extended" waiting list. Are the repros simply not available at this time?

Also, and this may not matter to some... these answers are searchable with a couple clicks. It's a hassle to comb through the judging guide. Sometimes the answers are buried in a chapter that may not always be the clearest on where it is. We're creating an easy-to-use knowledgebase here that will be valuable long after we're all gone.

If I were doing a restoration that involved the backing plate I would look it up. However, I NOW, know that the correct color is semi-gloss black and if someone should question the correctness of my 60' or if I saw one in flat black I would know that it was wrong and could point this out to the owner. I have just learned something new by reading this thread, even though some members may regard this as a dumb question that never should have been posted.

My '60 never had backing plates (inside the fiberglass fender, behind the spears) on one side of the car...

If you do not have anything nice to say do not say anything ( most Moms told us this ). Otherwise it looks like "ego". We did not all join the NCRS in the 1970's or 80's and I needed a car that my wife and kids could fit in. You Guys are going to kill the NCRS!
