    72 ZR-1 Brake Calipers

Just wandering if anybody had any pictures of the 72 ZR-1 brake calipers and part #'s for the 72 ZR-1 option. And also was there anything else special with this option, bigger master cylinder, lines etc. Much thanks.

Same casting #'s as regular brakes. Just the machine work to remove the pad for the single pin and the drilling for the dual pins.

Thanks for the info, that was a cool way to improve pad performance, does anyone sell brake pads for the ZR-1? I am sure they don't sell many.

Thanks again for the info and pictures,it sure seemed like GM went to a lot of trouble to get a little more brake out of the same dual piston caliper. no wonder they didn't sell many with this option.

The only J-56 pads I see on this web-site are USED pads. Who would want a set of USED pads?

There may be some outfit out there that can re-line these pads. I hope so, anyway. I've got a LARGE collection of original used J-56 pads. Without someone offering re-line service, I always figured they were worthless (not that I'd be wanting to sell them, of course).

I think that CSSB can get them relined for you. Some restorers/owners will not have anything but original parts.....try to find a set of OEM pads. Repro easily detected with a magnet.

So if I'm reading the CCSB catalog correctly, they want $400 for (essentially) the Inconel backing plates for the two front wheels; it's up to you to find someone that can re-line .

                  Not any more .

BTW, Corvette News, Vol 9 #6 describes the linings thus:

"Brake shoe material is a tough wrought nickel alloy (Inconel) chosen primarily for its ability to retain strength at elevated temperature. It remains stable under repeated high temperature stress and is corrosion-resistant. Brake shoe structural rigidity is increased by flanging the top of the shoe, and two pins are used to retain the shoe within the caliper assembly ... The lining material attached to the shoe is a special semi-metallic composition, selected for excellent high-temperature stability and durability. Linings are also larger for a greater effective braking area"

I had an inconel set relined by a shop probably known to many of you. I'm sure they would function well, but the friction material looked terrible. It appeared to be crudely cut out using a band saw. At present I am running an aftermarket set, maybe Hawk. My last original Delco set is in the safety deposit box.

I do remember Hawk to have the correct pads. I needed some for a 69 Z28 I had that had with JL8 / J56 calipers on them. VERY dusty though!

Wow, if the current C6 ZR1s ever become the kind of car that gets restored, I feel for the guys trying to find the CARBON CERAMIC rotors........yipe.

Here is an opportunity for all of you who think Corvette parts are an investment. I believe the ZR1 rotors are available from your friendly local Chevrolet dealer. Stock up while you can.
