I recently replaced the headlight switch on my 1957 Corvette just before setting out on a 2000 mile trip. Although many difficulties were encountered, the most perplexing was the headlights would cut out.
After 4 days on the road, mostly in the rain, I experienced a strange problem. After running several nights with the headlights on and without incident, as I left the NY thruway toll booth in Buffalo the headlights suddenly went out. The instrument lights and the turn signals still worked, but the headlights would briefly flash on then off. If I shut them off for a couple minutes then they would work okay for awhile (maybe 10 min). This same thing was repeated over then next several days. I never had any problems with the old switch over 28 yrs except the the diming portion never worked, thus the replacement. I called the supplier today and they said if the circuit breaker in the switch was opening up, there would not be any lights in the vehicle. Hard to believe that a wiring problem surfaced after all these years. Anyone had a similar experience? The car is in storage in Vermont until I return on June 5th so I cannot do anything right now. I may put the old switch back in and see if the problem shows up with that one. Of course, when I had the car home, it was fine.
Any comments, suggestions are most welcome.
