    Polarizing Generator 1961

I just installed an original (not new) date coded regulator on my 1961. The charging system worked fine prior to changing the regulator. I started the engine and used a jumper wire to make contact between the Batt. and Gen terminals on the regulator (spark). Check the amp gage and it showed charge or +, turned lights on and gage went to center. Shut the car off and then started it again, the gage read center, when I turned the lights on with engine running the gage went to the Neg. side of the gage. Bad regulator?

    Thanks for any help! Ray

Remember, generators are notorious for having a rather substantial 'cut through' profile. That means you won't get appreciable charging output until engine RPM's climb to normal crusing speed (1500-2000 RPM or more). So, if you're assessing the operation of your generator and regulator with the engine sitting at/near curb idle, you're pushing on a rope...

I think you need to polorize the generator/regulator before it is started.

I could not get the generator to charge using the replacement 9001D regulator. I cleaned all terminals including the braded ground, polarized generator and still no luck. I changed the regulator back to the regulator that was on the car and it charges correctly. Is there an operational check or adjustments for the regulator? All interior components look new with no broken connections or corrosion.

        Thanks for any help!

          Ray -

There is an extensive section on regulator diagnosis/adjustments in the 1961 Passenger Car Shop Manual, which is a "must-have" for C1 owners; it covers the gory detail on all components shared with passenger cars (which are NOT covered in the ST-12 manual). The NCRS Store has them.

I have a 1961 passenger car service manual, never thought to look in it for this problem. Thanks for the help! Ray
