    C-1 leaf spring banding tool

I'm certain this question has been asked before, so I apologize in advance for the apparent redundancy.
I recently purchased a banding rebuild kit from Corvette Central for the leaf springs on my 1961 stock Vette. They indicated initially that they rented the 5/8" banding tool, (Signode SRC-5823) but clarified later that they had problems getting people to return the banding tools, so they no longer offered it to rent. So I have two questions:
    1. as I haven't been able to find any used SRC-5823 tools for sale, would another 5/8" banding tool (i.e. C-5823 or YC-5823) also work?
    2. do any of you gear-heads out there have a SRC-5823 that I can rent?

There's a Signode SFC-5823 5/8" strapping machine on EBay right now.

Re: C-1 leaf spring banding tool

I used Richard's technique and ordered the tool from Norther Tool off the internet and paid something like $29 for it. I ordered a kit first from Paragon and their retainers didn't look like the originals so I ordered another kit from Corvette Central and their retainers look much more like the originals. If you look closely at Richard's instruction he modified his tool and it makes two crimps. I did mine a little different so that it would only make one crimp which is what my originals looked like. Pictures attached.

You guys are the Best! I do appreciate the council!! One clarifying question:
          1. when I Goggle SRC-5823, I read on several sites that it crimps a "Single Reverse Notch", but what I think I hear you describing is a double notch. Which is correct?

Norm, Don's method with the single crimp(each side) is correct. Mine had 2 crimps each side......not as original. I will use Don's method next time and modify my tool like he did.

p.s. That tool on ebay looks like it may be tricky to use. The hand tool seems like it may be easier.

Thought I'd post a pic of the crimp the SRC-5823 makes. Exact opposite of what we want. I should have paid more attention. I'll see if I can ever find correct Signode seals again. I doubt it. *cry*. Rich, You think if I reconfigure the teeth on a C-5823 I could get the original crimp?

Ian, Yes. I reconfigured my tool again to make the 2 crimp clamp like original. I restored a set of 61 springs after our previous talks. I added spacer washers to replace one of two teeth. All pics here....http://s684.photobucket.com/user/ric...%20Restoration

2 crimp teeth(the silver pieces after grinding). I reconfigured by removing one and using washers for filler spacers

                one crimp tooth after modification

                  TechArticleC1LeafSpringBandsAndClamps.pdf

Norm - I'll offer up this tech article as a supplement to what you've already learned from Richard, Ian, and others. When you get to the point of banding your spring packs, ensure the tails (the excess banding material that you will snip off) always faces to the left. This is the case with all the originals we observed. See the article for more detail. Tim

hey Rich, do you have a source for the correct clamps?

Ian, I know of now supplier for the originals. How many do you need? I may have a few kickin' around.

I would need 6 for a new set, so I wouldn't want to raid your stash!
