I hope this is not out of line for NCRS (let me know if it is!) but it is a safety enhancement that I believe members might find interesting. I have converted a 1979, a 1967, and now a 1974 to daytime running lights (DRLs). With a low frontal area Corvettes can benefit from increased exposure to oncoming traffic. And these lights do the job.
The kit is based on an electronic module kit that connects to the front parking lamp extensions. The kit contains all components needed to do the job except solder and shrinkwrap. Cost is ~$40.00.
The wiring is pretty simple but a bit time-consuming with some cutting, soldering, and shrinkwrapping. The kit contains scotch-locks to make things easy but I tend to be a bit more thorough. The job took about three hours.
What it basically does is illuminate the bright (turn signal) filament on the normal #1157 bulbs (I converted to #2357) with ignition key ON. To get power I ran 16-gauge wire from the front of the car to the IGN terminal on the fuse box. That is occupied in 1974 by the power window wiring but interestingly GM saw fit to have an AUX fitting off that and I used it.
I further (non-kit) added an LED toggle switch under the dash to have non-ignition manual control if need be. The red LED tells me when the DRLs are on. Push down on the switch and they are off. Aside from the module links to the front parking lamp extensions there are no cuts in the factory wiring harnesses. A 10-amp, in-line fuse-holder is wired/included for protection.
Well, what does it do?
-ignition on - DRLS - no tail lights
-parking lamps from headlight switch - no DRLs
-headlights on from headlight switch - no DRLs - parking and side lamps as per normal
-turn signal on left/right - DRLs switch off to allow proper illumination of one side only; reverts to DRLs when turn completed
Thought someone here might be interested. (Click on thumbnails to see.)
