    another 67 tele column question

looking at the service manual it shows a lock rod and a wedge. the column I am working with does not seem to have the lock rod. I would guess this is the part with the lock knob that locks the tele part of the column. but how does it all work. were does the rod go and what does it lock against

Here are two pictures that might help. Saginaw provided the steering column itself. Chevrolet provided the steering wheel, hub, lock and horn parts. That is why there are two seperate drawings of the same steering column. The following blowup shows the locking rod #32 and wedge #33. All of the parts in the blowup drawing were provided by Saginaw as part of the steering column assembly.

Here are the upper end parts supplied by Chevrolet.

Here are the addresses of two papers on the 1967-68 Corvette Telescoping Steering Column.

Thanks for the links. But I am still a little confused on how it all works. Were does the rod go down the column and how does it move the key to lock it in place.

        Keith,
the rod goes into the center of the shat (it slide in) when you turn the lock on the hub it pushes the rod down and pinches the stop locking the shaft in place. when you back of the hub lever it releases the rod and block allowing the shaft to extend.

About half way down inside the steering column is a locking wedge. It is called out in the following drawing.

The wedge is shaped like a quarter section of a disc. The rod pushes on one part of the disc causing it to rotate and cock which locks the upper and lower steering shafts together.
