I had to remove my vin tag to repair some rust holes. Now i'm ready to reinstall it and was told it takes a special rivet gun. I have the black rosette rivets but just thought regular rivet gun would work. Any input on how to install them? Also was the tag installed before or after blackout? thanks for any help.

Re: 69 vin tag reinstall
Based on my undertstanding of the new "Counterfeit" designation by NCRS, this could, IF detected, get the car branded counterfeit since it can not be said that this VIN plate and Trim tag left the factory together on said vehicle.- Top

Re: 69 vin tag reinstall
Brad,
Screw the legalities and do what you have to to YOUR car, this is restoration not Perry Mason.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to do it legally, I tried and the procedure is not written so they can't do any thing but bust you if you look like a crook.
I have jumped thru hoops with local law enforcement and at best they don't know what they are doing and WONT attempt to help. I told the officers that they make it easy to get busted and very difficult to do things legally.
NOW if you look like a chop shop they seem to get smart.
I have the tags off my 1957 chevy convert and will put them on with the correct rivets also, (public knowledge) after the fire wall gets blasted and painted. You can't remove the rust under the tag any other way without a 99.9% chance of destroying the tag.
I wanted to verify the # on my 67 coupe frame BEFORE I put the body on and they said they would AFTER the body was installed because the car had to be all together?
I have delt with 4 female and 1 male officer in my years here in CA on these matters.
I calling the police to check #s on a Matchless motor cycle that was behind a shop for years and about to be junked. I2 female cops came out and I told them I wanted it and wanted to make SURE it wasn't stolen.
She said their stollen data didn't go back to when the bike was left there. I asked her to record the #s on the bike for the police report. She took the #s off the shocks? I tried to show her where to look but she took comand and told me to back away.
I would bet that the vin tags on many frame up restorations were removed to do proper work.
Maybe that is why there is one on stamped on the frame?
I was told a good chop shop does not remove the tag, they cut the piece it is riveted to where it wont be detected and weld in the whole piece in from another car, then grind the weld smooth. The same for the stamped frame #.
The vin tag is very important and some cherish it more than the car it's on. The #s are duplicated on the frame.
I don't think we have many bad guys on the forum that are chop shop guys.

Re: 69 vin tag reinstall
I made the initial response to Brad because I believed his explanation of what he was doing. If I didn't believe him I would not have commented. In the wild, wild West of the Internet there is always a chance someone with nefarious intent is reading these posts. Should the rest of us honest folks suffer because of the evil thoughts/actions of others? I think not, but recognize the risk to all of us, and also recognize there are differing opinions.Terry- Top
