    L76 L79 LT1 Dyno Results Super Chevy

I found these dyno results the other day from super chevy magazine, Dyno testing some of chevys famous small blocks , The L79 345hp@5,400 and 381lb-ft torque@3,900 The L76 352hp@6,300 and 363 lb-ft torque@4,300 The 1970 LT1 353@5,500 and 391 lb-ft torque@3,800 They tested the engines with open headers.

Yeah, right, we all have headers and run them open with no mufflers at standard sea level conditions.

These kind of lab dyno tests with headers and no mufflers are next to worthless.

The only thing that counts is SAE CORRECTED RWHP in normal configuration with normal engine accessories and a reasonable road exhaust ection.

Guys look at these lab dyno numbers and think they have a "350 horsepower" engine.

    BS!

If you want to know what your engine really delivers to the rear wheels, get a chassis dyno test with SAE air density correction. A "300 horsepower" engine will likely not break 200, and an SHP/FI configuraton will be in the 220-240 horsepower range.

Of course, with proper massaging that will not lose judging points and pass a PV a 327/300 will be well over 200 SAE corrected RWHP and well over 250 for a similarly massaged SHP/FI small block.

Those tests have been on the Web for well over a year, and IIRC the induction systems, nothwithstanding the exhaust systems are not OE. Take them with a BIG grain or salt.

It should also be noted that the L-76 they included was a 64+ version, not a 63, i.e., no so called 30-30 cam and 2.02 valve heads, etc. (FWIW).

Those magazine tests always have something non stock and something modified on one or more of the tested engines that screws up my entire interest in the results.
Just for once why can't they test REAL engines just as they were produced without any modifications or swaps.

Then after they do that show the same engines with modifications that do not show on the external engine such as head porting, rocker arm ratios, re-jetting, polishing, bigger valves and cam swaps. Doing this all thru the 2 1/2" exhaust system so the car looks stock.

Oh yeah, the tested RPM range from idle to 6,000, not the starting at 3,500 stuff you see all the time.

          I agree get the RWHP.
