Is the timing plate on the front of the engine (350) supposed to be left unpainted or painted?

The original timing tab on my original owner 1969 small block was painted with the rest of the engine.

Most Chevrolet engine timing tabs are unpainted, and the engine plant instructions stated it was not to be painted.

Simple- do a lousy job of painting only half.

If there is no clue from your original engine -- do what the TIM&JG says.
