Vincent the original wiring to your 71's coil only needs to be protected. A good secure taping will work.
To get what you need for your HEI is easy. On your fuse block there is a bare terminal labeled IGN. Make up a wire with a good female terminal end to connect to this terminal and run the wire out the firewall to the HEI with another good female terminal to connect to the HEI.
This will give the HEI the full 12 volts it needs to operate. When you turn your ignition on, the HEI will have the 12 volts and your 71 will start right up when you turn the switch to start it.
My 70 has been wired this way for many years using the HEI.

Jim, what plugs are you using and did you increase the gap to .50

Vincent I installed a General Motors crate engine tagged as a ZZ1 in the early 90's. Engine came with aluminum heads, roller cam, and the HEI distributor.
The first engine was a ZZZ crate engine built by GM similiar to mine. The ZZ1, ZZ2, ZZ3, were previous editions of these small blocks with aluminum heads that were offered before the current ZZ4 small block crate engine.
The plugs that came with my ZZ1 and still in use are FR5LS gapped at .035. Later ZZ's used the same plug and gap.
