Parking brake cabe installation

I'm putting my parkijng brake cable onto my new trailing arms and the slot on the brake lever seems large and the cable seems to want to pop out of the lever. Should the slot in the lever be pinched to prevent this? I don't have my old hardware and can't check but I remember having to work at removing the cable when I took it out. Thanks!!!
