Re: API oil service category update

The answers to your questions are in the engine oil article in the Summer 2008 Corvette Restorer - absolutely crystal clear!

Given your NCRS number you should have it.

    Hint - Key words:

    Primary service category
    Secondary service categories
Applicability of S-category P limitation depending on the winter grade rating.

Now, for the benefit of others, when you rediscover the answers, come back and tell everyone what they are to reinforce their knowledge.

      Duke,
What is the shelf life of a sealed jug/bottle of oil. In otherwords can one stock up with CJ 4?
      Thanks, Scott

Estimates vary, but I would not buy more than a three year supply. Additives are held in suspension, but over time there is some "drop out".

I recall having a quart of old oil that someone left with me. It was maybe ten years old. I finally used it for top-off, but I noticed a thin dark film at the bottom, which was probably additive drop out.

If the time comes when the C-category spec limits P to below 1000 ppm, we may want to add some ZDDP-rich additive to bring it back to near 1200, but I don't think that day is coming anytime soon.

I hit a home run on Rotella a few months back. Tractor Supply opened a new store here and was running a special on cases of Rotella. I bought 16 cases for less per gallon that Wally World CJ oil. Over a dollar a gallon cheaper that I had been able to find it in drum quantities

              Duke,

My apology for asking an apparently dumb question. To make a long story short I don't have back issues of NCRS publications........so I cannot read the issue you are referencing and "report back". Years ago I was a member until I sold a C3 I then owned. C2s were too expensive for my pocketbook, but........last year I came to the realization that a C2 was on my "Bucket List".......cost be damned. Therefore, "here I am again". Again my apologies. In the years I didn't own one of GMs finest I let my NCRS membership lapse as I thought I'd never own a Corvette again. There.........I've gone and made it a long story anyway. In the future I'll try to refrain from asking dumb questions......no guarantees, you understand.

Couple of years at the most. Truck takes 4 gallons at a time. Plus the other stuff around here.

I finally saw some for sale at Auto-Zone too. 5 qts. jug of Motorcraft for $13.99. I guess Motorcraft is making a run at Rotella.
