I have an early built 57 Oct.12 56 car. What battery should I consider purchasing. I understand that there were two different designs. One with the terminals positioned in front of firewall, negative facing the engine. The other option is the position are the terminals are located towards the front of the battery. Hopefully, I am making some sense. I have reveiwed the AIM and I find it confusing. However, it does appear there was a change made sometime in Oct 56. COMMENTS PLEASE!!

Re: 1957 replacement original replacement
Do you have the Judging Guide? Doesn't appear there is any significant difference '56 to '57. It states both '56 & '57 batteries are model 2SMR53 with a tar top, but the '57 shows "CAT. NO. 458" on the top, no mention of what the '56 battery was. Should have yellow plastic vent caps with "DELCO" molded in but NOT painted black. Also has a three character date code stamped into the tar top with last digit of the year, alpha month code A through L and a manufacturing location code. Installed with terminals towards the front, negative inboard.
Hope this helps.- Top
