Headlght Indicator Lamp on Dashboard 1970

In the judging manual it does not say what is correct as far as the headlight indicator lamp on a 1970 in the center console of the dashboard. When I turn my headlight on the lamp illuminates and stays on, does not go off when the headlights are fully extended. As someone told me it should. I tried jumpering out the switches and checking other connections. But everything looks good. Any tips.

The lamp should extinguish when both headlight buckets are in up and locked position. I believe that jumpering the switch will cause the lamp to stay lit, not extinguish it. Try unplugging them instead.

A little more material on the pad of the switch that turns the lights on after the lights are up . It isn't turning the light off when they are up ,

The light position indication light should illuminate when the head light switch is in ether off or head lights on but not parking lights. It is to warn you the head lights do not agree with the switch position.

The most common issue is the that the switches 1 on each head light assembly is not being depressed or the switch has failed internally. If you view the switch from the ground there is a paddle looking part on the linkage that contacts the switch when the lights are full open. If it is not making contact that maybe your problem and you may be able to adjust the linkage to make proper contact. Remember both switches must be contacted to the open position or the light will remain on.

You can test the switch with a voltmeter by removing the connector and place one lead on each pin then depress the switch this should cause an open in the switch if not that is your problem. "But be very careful when working with these switches they are made from a plastic material and can be broken very easily."

A quick test you need 2 people one in the car the other under the front of the car. The one under the car make sure the switches are depressed and if not can manually depress them if needed.

          Les,
All the above are good suggestions. If you follow Paul's suggestion about a helper make certain that helper has their fingers out of the way of the headlight mechanism when you oper5ate the controls. Serious damage to the fingers can occur from the headlamp or windshield wiper door mechanism. Be careful.

Don't quite follow what you're saying. The headlights will illuminate if the dash switch is pulled, irrespective of whether they are raised or not. The electrical and vacuum systems are common to the same switch, but independent in function. The warning lamp is wired in parallel with the headlamps and is extinguished when both warning switches lose their ground.
