62 Honduras Maroon Color Codes???

1962 Honduras Maroon paint

I have been going through all of the archives on this web site as well as the CF one to research Honduras Maroon paint. From what people have noted, it is a very difficult color to duplicate, and today's metal flake is different than back in 62, so that is also an issue.

I am trying to determine the most accurate paint codes/mix for both single stage and BC/CC (I have not decided which I will user yet).

I did find the following codes for the different companies:

Valspar = R2252
PPG = 50568
DuPont = 4034
RM = 1221
SW = 1917
MS = 3081
WA = 2670



What are people using? What is recommended?

I've been following your restoration creep since you signed on and have been impressed with your effort.....are you really going to paint that nice looking white car Maroon...Was that the original color ?

Tony,
Regardless of which paint manufacturer you use you need to get a pint of paint mixed and do test panels.
I am not familiar with the paint codes you listed but if they are more then a few years old they probably can not be mixed due to constant changes in the pigments and resins.
The early Honduras maroon contained metallics which are no longer available.
A similar problem exists when trying to duplicate Milano Maroon which was used on 65, 66 and 67 Corvettes.

I'm looking at new car colors that appear 'close'. I have seen so many variations of HM my head is spinning. I have some original panels but lose hope when some paint guy says no problem we'll use the computer. I chased saddle tan on my 63 too far to get wrapped up in another color chase.

I'm looking at mini cooper night fire red as a distant cousin candidate. Constantly staring at maroon cars for a glimpse of 1961. Carry my panel with me at all times. The honduras maroon pepto bismol 61 I saw at Carlisle one year still gives me nightmares.

Painter with a good eye and an original color selected by computer to begin with is the best route.

Wouldn't it be neat if someone has an 'accurate by consensus' color mixed and the formula is posted by weight and volume in a special section on this website?

Thanks for the feedback and advice, and the complement. Those paint codes were posted a year+ back on CF, so they are old. This has definitely been a learning experience since this is my fist vette (actually the wifes).

Was the "mini cooper night fire red" was that the closest or did you find others to be closer/similar?

My '61 is HM, a BC/CC repaint done 5-6 years ago. Done by a retired body shop gent who made every effort to recreate the special characteristics of HM (looks different in different lights). Despit his efforts, I have never had two knowledgeable judges agree on the color - too light, too dark, wrong metallic, etc. The judges told me that if you put four HM cars next to each other (today) they will exhibit four different color characteristics.
I have an original DuPont HM paint chip that "disappears" when held on my car, but I'm told that the chip is not actual paint, so that match means little.
I love the color, my wife loves the color,................

I have an original paint 62 fuelie--the trunk was repainted for some reason prior to 1965--even then they had problems matching the paint, and that was good old lacquer days. I also have an original paint 62 trunk lid from another car--that isn't even exactly the same as the original paint.

The photo spectrometers only get you in the ball park. You need to then tint to match. The bigest problem is that the flakes of aluminum need to be changed from every formula to get the correct size.....then that throws the shade off. I have sprayed 20 plus mixes to get the right color for cars I have painted. I am about ready to go through this with 69 Lemans Blue and Burnish Brown.

Well after 3+ weeks of prep with block sanding and more block sanding, the 62 got painted Honduras Maroon today and looks fantastic!!!!

Now the fun part of color sanding the body and the final buffing. The plan is by this weekend starting to get it all back together and figuring out where the 10000 nuts, bolts and screws go.. LOL
