    C2 harmonic balancer questions

    What length is the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer to the crank? This is a service replacement engine (67 block )Mine is missing and there is a show this weekend I'd like to be in so I don't have time to wait for one if I order it.
    Second question, I have an 870 correct block to put in the car (64 300HP). It has a pressed on balancer. I have a puller to remove the balancer but how do I get it back on when the crank is not threaded? does the engine have to be out to accomplish this?
    Third question, will the stepped 64 870 balancer fit the 512 crank?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Dan;

    Your '64 motor should have a threaded crankshaft as well. You may need to use a puller to get the balancer off but installation should be done via the bolt and washer. IF your crank is not drilled and tapped get that done before you install the engine. Pressed on balancers to not stay "pressed on", particularly if they are removed and re-installed.. Don't ask me how I know.. but trust me the damage a flying balancer can do is significant. The bolt is correct for C2s... and many C1 guys have the cranks drilled and tapped for safety, removing the bolt for judging.

      Dan -

      In '64, only the L-76 (365hp) and L-84 (375hp) engines had a crank with the balancer bolt hole and the bolt from the factory, although it's a good idea to add it for peace of mind. Pressed-on balancers (with no bolt hole in the crank) can be installed with a hammer and a piece of 2x4 that only bears on the balancer hub; you can have a helper hold the clutch pedal down while doing that so the thrust surface of the rear main bearing doesn't take a beating.

        The bolt is 7/16-20 X 2-1/4" long.

        What's a "512 crank"?

          Re: C2 harmonic balancer questions

          512 is the block #. my research show this is a replacement block from GM The date code is A227. It is a threaded crank unlike the 870 (L76) that isnt. I have the 870 to install (pending rebuild), but the harmonic balancers are not the same. I was wanting to install the 64 balancer since it is the correct (stepped) balancer, but since the motor is still in the car I dont believe I can get it beat into place, so I will leave the 512 balancer on for now but it is missing the bolt. I dont want to trust it without the bolt in place.
          Thanks for all the help.
