    Road Draft Tube

My '65 (327/300)'s original equipment road draft tube has seen some better days, and after spending several hours cleaning the underside of the car, I'd rather not do that job again for a while! Can I simply replace the road draft tube with a vent tube that connects to the air cleaner base or are there potential problems with that move?

    Joel -

Your '65 never had a road draft tube - some previous owner added it; '62 was the last year for that design. Your car should have a crankcase vent tube from the vent hole at the rear of the block that connects with a rubber hose to the air cleaner base, as shown in your Assembly Manual in UPC 6, sheet C3. All of the usual vendors have the parts you need.

John is absolutely 100% correct. When I first started reading your comment, I suddenly wondered why you had a 65 with a road draft tube?????

Thank you, John and Tom, for your replies. I'd looked through the TDB archive before posting and found two references to '65 and/or small blocks having the road draft tube, and since the engine is original to the car, I assumed (my bad) it was originally equipped that way. At this point the carburetor is no longer original and there've been other "cosmetic" changes like aluminum finned valve covers vs. stamped steel and a '66/'67 style air cleaner. I don't plan to undo any of these changes at this stage of the game, but I definitely will get rid of the road draft tube.
