    67 bolt on wheel question

How do you tell the difference in original and repro 67 bolt on wheels?

Re: 67 bolt on wheel question

    Rex,
No one bit so I will throw my 2 cents out there. Original bolt on wheels have a much thinner "fin" than the mejority of the reproduction wheels out there. Also, the lip is much deeper and more pronounced. There are mold patches/Ribs on the back side of the wheels that originals have (though one repro company makes them with the mold patches too). Someone may chime in with the exact fin width thickness, but I don't know it off the top of my head, I just know a real one when I see one....my eyes can tell the fin width and the lip....I just purchased another set of original bot on wheels this week so it's all fresh in my mind...if you want some pictures, email me and I will send you some...Good luck with your search..Feel free to contact me with any other questions....

Also, regarding the center caps, the earlier and more sough after design caps had a "HC" in the center cap, later and less desireable center caps have/had the PMC logo. FWIW..

      Rex -

Photo below shows the two groups of eight ribs on the back of an original N89 wheel; the new repros from AFC have them, but the older repros don't. Also, original wheels use regular production lug nuts, and the usual repros use large holes in the wheel with long-shank cylindrical mag wheel lug nuts with a 7/8" domed hex head.

A question, John: I have a set from AFC. The center cap is plastic (although a fine piece of plastic). Doesn't this differ from original? If not, from what you have said I gather that the AFC wheels could pass judging as original if the Judge didn't remove the starburst to look at the lug nuts?

Yes, it does - the original starburst and (separate) cap ornament were chrome-plated die-castings. The unexposed portion of the road wheels covered by the starburst would be observed when the spare wheel was judged.
