    Oil choice

I just purchased a 65' 327/365 that has been only run sporadically over the past few years. It runs strong, but going on a 1,000 trip.

I am replacing all the fluids. What weight oil do your recommend ? I am in south Florida.

I would use a 10W-30 or 10W-40. For an application like yours, I'd also definitely use an oil that has a primary diesel service rating with a secondary gasoline rating. Shell Rotella and Chevron Delo are two examples of this type oil.

I live in Central Florida and use the Rotella T 15w-40 year around in my 63 327/340hp. If you're not going to venture into the cold and snowy north, that might be the better choice.

This is what I use, also. I live in Dallas, and I do drive year around. Normally if it's very cold there will be some ice or snow storm (like Super Bowl week this year), and once they start slinging sand around, I won't go out on the streets until we get enough rain to wash all the accumulated sand away. So I don't have to worry about it being super cold at start up. Good thing, because 15w-40 is the only weight I could find for Rotella T.

          I agree. I'd stick with the 10W30.

Use Rotella T or another similar CJ-4 service grade. 10-30 or 15-40 are fine.

Shell Rotella and Chevron Delo are not available in 10W-40. No C-category oil is. The closest to this viscosity range for C-category is 15W-40.

Delo is available as a 10W-30, but not commonly found. I don't know if Rotella is offered as a 10W-30.

Viscosity range is one way to differential between S-category and C-category without even looking at the API certification donut on the back of the package.

              If it's a 10W-40 it is S-category, and all 15W-40 is C-category. I know of no exceptions.

The 15W viscosity is okay for consistent cold starts down to about 20-25F ambient temperature and occassional cold starts down to the 10-15F range. Give that few vintage car owners drive their cars when it's this cold, 15W-40 should be okay of 99+ percent of vintage car owners.

Duke Shell Rotella was available in 10W-30 at my local O'Reilly's and I have bought 10W-30 at Wal-Mart many months ago.

Really Jim, I'll have to keep my eyes open for that. I was at our local Wal-Mart just the other day wasting time in the auto section while the wife shopped. The only other Shell oil I spotted of interest was their Synthetic 10w x 30.
