    Can Am engine parts help

Does anyone know the casting number for the crankshaft used in the 430 inch aluminum big block Chevy engines used in the Can Am cars back in the late 60s - early 70's? It was 3.47 inch stroke. Also, I have an NOS set of GM pistons, part #3992052 on the box and 3992055 stamped on top of the pistons. Anyone know what these are for? Can Am engine perhaps?

    Thanks,
    Rex

If no one else can help you, I have my old parts list for the Can Am engine at my office. I will be back sometime tomorrow and look it up for you

        Rex,

Your 3992052 is a std. hi-limit piston for a 465" Can-Am block. This is a piston for standard bore but is on the high side of the size range.

The 465 uses a 427/L88 crankshaft and rods.

I have no info on the 3992055. I don't know if that part number was ever a finished part.

a "W" engine crank will fit a "mark 4" block so you have several choices of strokes, 3.250 and 3.500

            Rex,

My Chev Special Information Catalog shows a part number of #3965746 for a 430 ci engine. They call this a "Semi-Finished " crankshaft. They do not reference a casting number. They say special rods are also required for this displacement, I believe it is #3963642. The #3992052 piston is as Michael says, 465 ci, Std - Hi Limit.

Re: Can Am engine parts help

Thanks everyone for your input. My "original" plans were to use a Kryptonite 4 inch stroke crank, these pistons and Carrillo 6.135 rods to achieve 495 inches in an original aluminum Can Am block, 4.440 bore.

Am I correct with these figures?

Otherwise........."IFFFFFFFFF" I were to use an original GM 3.47 stroke Can Am crank, can I use these pistons and the Carrillo rods to achieve the 430 inch displacement?

              Thanks,
              Rex

need to know the compression distance, from the flat on the top to the piston to the center of the pin hole in the piston to know what rods to use. also you need to know the deck height of the block

I'll have to dig out a little more info but I think the pistons that you have would only be used with an L88/3.76" stroke crankshaft and the standard length L88 rods.

A 430" would require a special crankshaft (3.47") and longer (6.404") connecting rods with unique pistons used in 430 and 495" engines.

The cheapest and probably most logical route with what you have now would be a 465" because it uses the 4.44" bore pistons you have and a common 427 crankshaft/rods.

Clem, the best I can tell, that distance is 1.75 inches...................center of pin to top flat of piston.

My Chev book shows the #3963642 rod with a length of 6.404-6.406 for the 430 ci. A 495 ci will build up with a 454 crank and L88 rods. An L88 crank and rods will produce the 465 ci engine.

looks like they are for a 3.760 stroke with 6.135 rods
