    85 Fuel Pump,tired of replacing,Help!

Fuel pump went out on my 85' vette with tpi and I replaced it with a GM pump,Fuel tank clean as a whistle, new fuel filters.Fired it up and ran good, then a few days later after sitting, wouldn't start.Replaced it with another GM fuel pump and ran fine for few days and guess what, that fuel pump quit. I guess it's time to ask a dumb question, bad GM pumps? or maybe something stupid I ain't thought about. Any help would be wonderful.Thanks.

Gary when I start my 85 I have learned that it will start immediately if I will turn the ignition on. With the ignition in the on position I listen for the firewall fuel pump relay to click off, then turn to the start position.
Sure saves me from cranking the engine any more than it has to be cranked for a immediate start up. My wife follows the same procedure.
Can you hear the your fuel pump relay function?

I have had a Walbro 255 in my 86 for almost 10 years now. During that time, it has worked perfectly 100% of the time.

Dave is right about the in-tank connectors. I cut the original fasteners off of my wiring harness and soldered new insulated connectors back onto the OEM wiring harness.

You should also do a fuel rail pressure and leak-down test to assure that your fuel regulator is up to snuff. your fuel pressure should be in the 30-40 psi range and hold rail pressure for at least 30 minutes after you shut your engine off. Finally, make sure that your relay is in good working order and not causing an intermittent problem. They are cheap enough so you might want to change it out as a precaution.

We sell Delphi senders and pumps and after 1000's of sales have had only 3 sender/pump issues. When sent back to Delphi for evaluation, each pump failure was due (according to Delphi) to debris that was ingested by the pump. That means dirt in the tank. No matter what route you choose, I would remove the tank and clean it out, if it were me.

            Gary:

I was a Regional Manager for Airtex and retired about four years ago.

You might want to check out their interactive web site www.airtexproducts.com or call their Tech line 1-800-424-7839. The tech's working the phones are pretty knowledgeable and may be able to help you fix your problem.
