    PKE Question for Tom Hendricks

    Tom,

Having trouble with the PKE system on a 96 Coupe.

    Symptoms

Fob (hand control) whatever it's called.

Opens the hatch. (when button is pushed)
Unlocks the right door only (when button is pushed)

Will not lock or unlock door when approached or walking away.

New battery and programmed correctly per instructions or it would not open the hatch and unlock the door?? correct??

    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Joe

Joe, I had a 97 that had the same features and remmeber a few thing that I had to do with my car, after the fob relearn was done the was a syc. mode that had to be done also, sometimes the fobs stay away for car to long, it was done by holding the lock and unlock buttons together at the same time until the horn beeps.also mine had a switch on FOB to shut off the feature . was a pain the when key was in pocket and washing the car. car always locked and unlocked the doors.

Joe, I always thought that the FOB would still work manually if the PKE was off, which is what it sounds like yours is doing. I sure Tom will tell us if it can work this way.

On page 2-6 of the 96 owner's manual it tells you once the PKE is armed a PKE light in the information center should come on for a second or two telling you it's on. Do you see this light when you turn the ignition key?

My guess is you have the PKE system turned off. Go out to the car and open the driver's door while holding the PKE in your hand. Now, hold the door button on the remote down for a few seconds until you hear the locks cycle. Now the system should be in the on position. The fob should now automatically unlock and lock the doors just by walking up to or away from the car. You will hear the horn toot when the car locks. Give me a call though and I'll tell you how to program it to unlock the driver's door or both doors when you approach. When you have it set in the driver's door mode, the driver's door will unlock and then you use the button on the remote to unlock the passenger's door. The button on the remote will never open the driver's door.

              Tom,

That guess was pretty damn good!

              Had the thing turned off!!!!!!!

Can't believe it was that simple!

Guess that's why I love the old cars. Just simple like me!

Thanks a million. I owe you big time!

                  Tom,

I just love the PKE system and broke the ring on the fob for the key ring about a year ago. Aaron Salsbury at Gwatney Chevrolet gave me a new one and I never could make the darn thing work after programming it.

Getting it to work again is like Christmas morning for a 10 year old!

Doesn't take much to make me happy these days!

                  Thanks again,

                  Joe

You would have to teach him to turn it back on, I don't know how to do that either!

Incidently, because of that other thread about the C4 deck lid being stuck, for the first time today I discovered the manual levers you talked about. Amazing after 15 years I'm still learning things about the car. Thanks for the heads up!
