77 sport mirror on new door

I had to use a new door when rebuilding the car so I have to cut new holes for the sport mirror. Looking at the assembly manual (p195) everything seems clear except the initial placement of any of the holes with relation to any starting point.

The holes that are there look like they set the centreline for height correctly - for the standard chrome mirror but I don't see how it sets the location of a hole with relation to front or back and from what point of reference.

Anyone know how to set a first hole for D35 option??
That top number in the circle (27.44) doesn't seem to help.

    Thanks

    Michael,
Looking at pages 195/196 of the 1977 AIM it appears that the holes must line up with the nut access holes on both the drivers side and the passenger side of the inner door panel. I would transfer a line using painters masking tap from the inner panel to the outer part of the door. I think it would be a good idea to put the tape also on the outside of the door and layout the holes so the paint is not compromised.

Re: 77 sport mirror on new door

Hi Al. The new door does not appear to be a 77. It's a C3 but clearly pre- sport mirror days so the inner panel lacks the correct holes and the single hole that is there is not in the correct location.

What I really need is just the starting point for any one of the 3 holes.
Since the passenger side also uses the same ref for 27.44 for the forward hole (which I don't understand what it is 27.44 against).

My thought is, given the mirrors positions are probably symetrical I could probably measure to the front of the right mirror to set the left.

But if anyone knows the correct way to make the first measurement that would help avoid assumptions.

      Thanks.

Make a template from the existing mounting holes on the passenger's door.

passenger mirror is already mounted on the car with the passenger window already in place.

Measure to the front edge of the right mirror mounting base to the front of the right door. Then measure from the front of the left mirror base to the first mounting stud. Add this dimension to the front edge of the left mirror mounting base to the front of door dimension. The combined dimension will be the dimension needed to locate the front hole on the drivers door.

so what you're saying is apply some simple math.

              Brother,
I don't know where my head is at but appreciate your patience,

              and persistence.

              Thanks Al and Micheal.

Michael, the sport mirror is mounted lower on the door than the standard chrome mirror. I ordered my '77 with sport mirrors but there was a shortage when the car was assembled. A couple of months later I bough tthe sport mirrors through parts. The Chev dealer mounted the mirrors in the standard mirror position and the angle is too far "in" to the car. They are still that way. If yours end up this way "shave" the rubber gasket between the mirror and door at an angle.
