    C2 NOS clock

The clock in my 67 runs sporadically; it has not been converted to quartz. Since it has air conditioning, I want to take out the clock only once. I also have a NOS clock that I've owned since about 1975. Question: Would I be better off to rebuild my old clock or put in the NOS one? I assume that the NOS one isn't going to magically run after all these years, though. How do you bench test a clock? I assume it's just a matter of connecting 12V power leads to the tabs on the back of the clock; if so, which tab is the + one? I also assume it's the tab that's held on by a nut since that tab is connected to the "guts" of the clock mechanism.

Can the NOS clock be oiled without taking off the housing? It shouldn't be dirty inside since it's been in a plastic bag inside a box all these years. What else should I do to prepare the NOS one, if you think that's the one I should go with? BTW, the old clock was professionally done and looks new, so appearance is not a consideration.

I really don't want to take the cover off the NOS one, mainly because I've never done that before. It's too pretty for me to screw up!

to bench test just hook up 12 volts to the hot side and ground the housing.

      Larry,

My personal opinion would be to use the original rebuilt clock. I believe the backside of the housing is date stamped. Usually the contact points on the inside cause them to stop working. They were not designed to be oiled or serviced. What I do is leave the power wire disconnected and when I want a clock, just reconnect it.

        Larry,

I would try to use the original clock, sometimes the clock can act like what you are experiencing when the battery cut off switch is used to disconnect the power. It's probably better to let them run like they were designed.

If that NOS clock has been stored in a plastic bag there is probably nothing wrong with it. What ever you do don't take it apart..

          Opinion here only.

An NOS clock is no better than a used original because I have never seen an NOS clock that would run after 40 years. Good luck with that!

Running or not the 40 year old clock has a gummed up movement and needs cleaning and oiling.

Same cost as a restoration in most shops.

Agree with Joe Ray. The lube has probably turned to gum in the NOS clock and it is not gonna give you much service. Sell the new clock on eflea and have yours rebuilt. The NOS clock will bring you more frogskins than it will cost to rebuild your old clock.

Timothy, I do not use a battery disconnect on this car; I drive it weekly. The clock stops, I can pull out the reset knob and let it go, and the clock will run a short time. but then stop again.

For whatever it's worth I have my original clock and an NOS one that I bought new in the 70's. I stored it in my hot Florida attic in it's box until the box desintegtrated years ago and then just in a plain box with some newspaper. The original one had stopped working many years ago. Last year I sent them both to Roger Scott in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. He rebuilt the original and tested the NOS one. He anticipated that the NOS clock would not work for the reasons stated in prior posts. To our mutual surprise the NOS clock worked perfectly. Maybe something to be said for a hot and humid climate.
