Since Walker was the OEM supplier to GM was this muffler ever available at a parts house that carried Walker muffler systems?

For the most part the Walker SERVICE mufflers were different than those supplied to OEM---they were not even made in the same factories. However, it's very possible that once-upon-a-time Walker offered an aftermarket muffler that was the same as those supplied to GM. If they ever did, though, they have not in at least the last 25 years.

Arvin was an alternate supplier to GM for these mufflers and the mufflers they made for GM were exactly the same as the Walker manufactured pieces (except for embossments). I know FOR CERTAIN that Arvin once sold 63-72 Corvette mufflers in the aftermarket that were exactly the same as those supplied to GM. However, the sale of those mufflers ended a VERY long time ago.

Here's a very interesting "How It's Made" episode on mufflers. I wonder how difficult it would be to have the skin flipped to the correct side of the body? Another thing that appears to be fairly simple would be to change out the shape of the end cap crimping tool, (to match the correct look of the originals)?

Imagine you buy the carbon steel pipes available from Corvette Central. In your line of reasoning that would allow the owner the possibility of gaining points in both finish and date axes, though the actual configuration of the system is the same. I'm not sure that it "flies" in my calculation. I usually think "could this part have been made at this time in history" more than whether or not it was actually made.

The way I look at it is a person buys a carbon steel system from xyz company. But the Config is missing some key features like wrinkles at the bends. That person during judging would lose Config and Date or 40%. We know from the Config that it was made after the original system was made hence the date issue.

Another person buys a system from same company but it has the wrinkles like the originals but now has the finish Aluminized. The Config is correct but we know that the Aluminized finish was not used when the original pipes were produced Hence the loss of Date and Finish or 40%.

So if one or the other or both buyers used carbon steel and Config correctly all would lose zero points if all the areas were met. We know how these parts were made how do we justify giving one owner a 20% and the other 40% deduct when we know both systems were made at a later date. The exhaust system is one of the few areas that could fall into were we could use Config and or Finish to determine the Date.

That is my thoughts on this or am I out in left field?

Following your logic, would not many reproduction parts lose their date because we know that they were made after the car was born?

My logic is that if you could have had a system made at Midas or wherever using 1970 technology that would look like what the car has installed, then how can you call date?

We should probably discuss this in person sometime.

That would be the best solution is to talk in person instead of using this gentleman posting.
