I am in the final stages of converting my 66 BB from manual steering to power steering. I have read the restorer article on PS pumps in Restorer Vol. 32 #2 & have seen the picture on page 156 of a 1963 SB pump in Nolans 63-67 book. I haven't found pictures on this site that show a BB pump. So, I still do not have a clear picture of the rear view of a 66 BB power steering pump showing the location and angle of the inlet & outlet hoses. I have two early PS pumps one from a 1964 (not Vette) & one from a 1970 They both have the early style resevoir. The 70 had a cast iron double groove pulley (BB, yes, Vette ???) & has the low pressure line at the 8 o-clock position on the outer edge of the housing 1 1/4" to the left of the high pressure fitting. The 1964 pump has the low pressure line in the center of the resevoir housing. Neither housing seems to have the low pressure tubing running at the proper angle. If I knew the proper angle I can relocate the tube. I know BB pumps were different than SB pumps. Did the BB housings have the Low Pressure tube moved to the outer edge of the housing for more clearance on the BB engine? Can some one post a picture or engineering drawing of a 66 BB PS pump showing the rear of the housing? Thanks, Glen.

Re: 66 BB power steering pump
Jack, Thanks for your response. I don't see the pump number 5098075 that you mentioned. However, in the N40 section of my 66AIM page F424 item #1 is a SB PS pump #5696222. On page F429 item #8 part# 5696999 I see a pump with BB brackets, UPC L-72. The back of the SB pump (F424) is shown with the tubes & hoses & and their orientation. The back of the BB pump (F429) and its tubes & hoses are not shown. Other than the pulley what is the difference between the SB & BB pumps?- Top

I don't know what the difference was between the two pumps. However, both pumps were supposed to have used the same reservoir, GM #5692845.
I can also tell you that both of the 1966 pumps you mentioned were discontinued in April, 1967 and replaced by the 1967 pump used for all Corvette applications, GM #5698078.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 66 BB power steering pump
Joe, So, maybe the only difference between the SB & BB PS pump assemblies is the pulley. That said, I should be able to use the SB, back of the pump view, as a guide to cut & re-orient the low pressure tube on my 1964 pump reservoir . Thanks for your comments.- Top

Re: 66 BB power steering pump
I didn't have a '66 AIM to look at, Glen. My '65 book showed two pumps (5893140 & 5696222) with the later being a running change introduced for L79. And, since the N40 option was short-lived for the mid-model year big block, I went to my '67 AIM.
As Joe confirmed, the same pump PN is called out for both SB and BB cars in '67. Also, the ECR blocks indicate there was a running change made early in the MY with the PN for the pump making the transition from 5098075 to 5698078.
That left me to believe the pump was an '075 in the '66 model year. That's why I phrased my thread reply as I did (what in your copy of the AIM...).
I think you'll find that the pump supporting components (mounting bracket, pulley, Etc.) all have discrete PN's. So, the difference in the pump's basic PN probably has something to with its specific configuration. And, the difference(s) may be as slender as internal components that can't be seen on the judging field (fluid filter, impeller, Etc.).
But, I don't think I'd be putting in a lot of time trying to nail this one down in the interest of getting the car right for judging. From what we've discussed here there were SEVERAL running changes on the pump from '64-67 and the descriptive text across the various mid-year judging guides doesn't appear to change...- Top

The pulley was not part of the pump assembly so the difference in part numbers would not be as a result of a difference in pullies. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
