    1972 LT1 - timing tab-painted or unpaint

The 1970-72 TIMJG reads on page 66-----"Regardless of year, the portion of the timing tab with the adjustment marks on it is supposed to be unpainted. A few original cars have been found where this detail was omitted, but the majority of engines have unpainted tabs."

    My questions are:

    1) Is the tab entirely unpainted--all surfaces horizontal and vertical?
    2) If it is not entirely unpainted can someone give me an a more definitive idea as to what surfaces are painted and what ones aren't? I assume any painted surface would be Chevy orange. correct?

    Thanks

The portion of the tab with the timing marks on it was supposed to be covered with masking tape. None was wrapped under the tab, just stuck to the embossed surface. The tab was installed on the engine when the entire engine was painted with .....
