    69 noise

Every once in a while, I hear a noise from the rear of the car that sounds like a noise you would get when a speedo cable is going bad. It will last for just a short while and then disappear and all is fine. I was thinking that it could have been the emergency brake cable hitting something but that doesn't appear to be the cause, so I'm wondering if that's a noise that would come from my posi differential? I wear hearing aids, so to be honest, the noise could be coming from just about anywhere but I suspect toward the rear of the car .

Does your car sit a lot? Does it seem to make this noise more when cornering? If so, your posi clutches could be dry. Find an empty spot in a parking lot and go around in a circle as tight as you can make it, 10 times, then do the same thing the other direction. This will lubircate the clutches and should elimate the noise if this is your problem.

I'm wondering if you have a rear bearing going bad. Maybe you could get someone to take a short ride with you to get a better idea. It could be louder at times.

Jim's idea of the rear end clutches is certainly possible as it causes a racheting sound.

Ken, Bob, thanks for your comments. Yes, the car does sit for extended periods of time, sometimes quite a few months without ever leaving the garage and that noise I hear is a "ratcheting" sound. I'll get her out for a drive and find a large parking lot and do some turns to see of that helps.

          Jim:

If the driving in circles doesn't cure it, then I would drain the fluid and replace with GM oil and posi lube. It only takes two quarts. I would then repeat the procedure of driving in circles.

          Good luck.
