    '72 underbody coatings??

I'm cleaning the underbody of my car before the rear suspension goes in. Should there be any coating on the outside of the passenger side glove box or battery box? Should it be bare, clean fiberglass? I have a bit of what looks like aftermarket undercoating overspray. Thanks!!

Lynn, there was a very little undercoating overspray on the rear boxes from when the factory did the undercoating on the seat belt reinforcments over the rear wheels. My 72 has some original undercoating in that area. and I believe that member Allan Struck posted some pic.s of his 71 car with some of the same undercoating in that area.

There would be a small amount of undercoating as mentioned as well as a little body paint overspray around the bottom edges and rear of the box tray.

Thanks, I think I'm a little over a "litttle" overspray. The entire outside and some of the bottom of each box is covered.

Best/safest, for the fiberglass, method of removing the stuff?

Lynn, a razor blade scrapper on the flat surfaces a little mineral sprits after you remove the thick layers. rubber gloves or latex gloves help keep the hands clean.

I found using mineral spirits in a spray bottle works great. Spray on the undercoating let it set and spray again. I did this several times and then used a plastic putty knife and some scotch brite pads on the really tought stuff. That method got off 30 year old undercoating pretty well. Once I was done, I sprayed the bare fiberglass with spary detailer.

For heavier undercoating, a heat gun and putty knife work very well. Just remember if you use a steel rather than a plastic putty knife to be careful you don't scratch or gouge the fiberglass.
