    63 tailpipe length

    What is the proper length for the tailpipe to protrude from the bezel at the rear valence? Or where should one measure to be correct length showing?
    I have to add a slight bit on my pipe protruding from muffler in order to get the tailpipe on and also hold the baffle in place with just one clamp. Somone cut the pipes an inch or so short!
    thanks,
    John

    John,

    Don't believe there is any set spec however most of us shoot for exhaust tip extension to be even with outer bumper edge.

      By "Baffle", are you referring to the 63 only galvenized heat shield that fits over the pipe end of the muffler? I found that when I put them on, it was all I could do to keep the chrome/stainless tip ends within the bumper ends. I worked at it a while and finally achieved a good placement. I like them in a little for protection by the bumper.

        Yes, the 63 only heat shields. To get them on the pipes and with only one clamp I need to extend my pipes from the mufflers, maybre an inch.
        A fine line between too short and not enough!
        Thanks,

          John;

          I believe part of the problem is that a number of the aftermarket replacement exhaust systems (not sure what you have) were made for use on 63 through say the 75 model years where they used mufflers that did not exit through the rear valance, rather had turn down elbow extensions. To accommodate those applications, they made the muffler exit pipes a little shorter. If you have one of these systems and are trying to fit repro heat shields and extensions too, you will have fun, but it can be done. With mine, I could not possibly adjust my extensions in or out any further. There seems to be just one position, no matter how much you push, pull or pound.
