57 NOS parts questions and more

Should I be looking for original spark plug shielding and have it replated or is the repro ok for judging?

How about the knobs on all the dash or under the dash controls, the washer pump and pedal assembly, hood pull, heater controls ... ?

What is the difference between a NOS front or rear Chevrolet emblem and repro? and would a judge be looking for this?

Hood and trunk latch hardware - find original and repair or go with repro??

Any idea how to take the wiper assembly apart to replace the bushing?

Can anyone at the Ohio swap meet look for some parts for me???

    Thanks guys and gals!

Re: 57 NOS parts questions and more

Hi Ken, I have a good idea about some of these things, as I have a fairly good supply of NOS parts. 1st there were many revisions on replacement parts thru the years, cost cutting , better design, etc... Of course 1st issue NOS would be the best chost , You really have to look at the vintage of parts & what packaging they came in as a reference to what production was being produced. Black & gold packaging will get you the best match 1950's early 60's. Yellow & white 1960's, then blue & white 1970's 80's..... then Delco pull string boxes, mostly red & white 1950's then orange & white 1960's then cardboard boxes 1970's & 80's. Of course these are only approximations. To sum it up, nos 1st issue is all but dried up & very $$$$$ later nos has to be compared to original pieces to determine match. I have a first issue hood & trunk emblem for 1957 in black & gold box & I compared it to a early 1970's one & you can tell a deference only when next to each other, but when mounted, hard to tell......

As for the dash knobs, just lightly buff/polish them most of them were flashed chromed over stainless & when you "over" buff them they will look too shinny & have a slight golden look to them.

As for hood & latch hardware, go with original as it will be painted with blackout paint on front ones & you want the original manufactures marks to show as they are stamped in many parts Gm made from there subcontractors. Rear hardware trunk lower find a 57 Chevy to get the ones you need as they are the same except latch lock meck. which repos are very close.

Wiper assy. plate would be better sent out to corvette parts shop to replace, there are articles in the past restorers magazines on how to do it.
