54 rear spring front eye bolt

My 54 rear leaf spring front eyebolt doesnt have a locking nut.
My 61 has side punched locking nuts ( nut side wall is punched on 2 of 6 sides to wave threads and lock nut.)
Is nonlocking correct, and what year was the change?

Should have a plain old nut on a 54.

agree with chuck. all the c-1's i've restored had a standard hex nut but the end of the bolts were peened to prevent the nut from loosening. mike

As I recall, the 56-57 Corvette AIM shows the use of lock washers in this application. It also gives the torque spec. So I was surprised to hear from some very experienced restorers that they've not found lock washers.

My unrestored, unmolested #3300 '54 has a split washer under the nut, no evidence of staking.

I checked the AIM and it does call for a lock washer in 56-57. So I'm thinking, based on my observations and Jim's, that from at least 53-57 washers may have been used. But perhaps they were deleted in later C1s?

For what its worth, there are no washers on the spring shackles at the other end of the spring.

my unrestored chassis - 3803 had a nut and lock washer
I saved them and photo'd it.
