C1 Oil Pan and Gasket help please

I bought a trap door oil pan for my 1960 270HP. I have been assuming that it was a later replacement pan and am getting ready to buy a pan gasket set for it.

I just measured it and I am getting what I think is 2 1/4" radius so I now assume that the pan is an older service replacement (pre 1975).

Please look at the third picture, am I measuring this correctly and if so, do I need the 55-74 gasket set?

Anyone got any idea what this pan is? I had assumed that it was #359937 from picture I have seen and the side grooves.

    Thanks,

    Don

if that pan was bead blasted inside i would have it ultrasonically cleaned to make sure all the beads are gone. if there are beads left they can cause a real problem for your engine.

I'm not sure what the previous owner did, but it looks like the inside was also blasted. Where would I find an ultrsonic cleaner big enough to clean this?

        Thanks,
if you live in or near a large city try the yellow pages. the beads stay in those joints where the internal baffle is welded. if the pan is painted i would first have it "hot tanked" to remove the paint and then have it cleaned.

This is a pre-1975 C1 pan, either original PRODUCTION or SERVICE. Most likely, it is a GM #3789629 which was used for 1962 Corvettes, but it could also be one of several other part numbers.

You need the 1955-74 gasket set for this pan. This set will have a front seal which is 0.22" thick. All the other components of the set are the same as 75+.

In response to your first question, your measurement appears to be the 2/14" radius which uses the 57-62 pan gasket. A 2 3/8" radius would be for the later pan but your's doesn't appear to be 2 3/8".

The pictured pan is not an original Corvette production pan.

So do you have any idea what it is then? I had assumed it was a later replacement. I don't really care if it will work for my 60

Don, this looks like the service pan stamped 359127 but ordered under 359937 that I have which I bought in '04. Still in the box. Mine has the pn stamped on outside on the middle step. Yours may be an older version. Mine came out of Canada and I believe out of the last batch made.

It has one long strike with two short ones on one side (like the picture you posted) and on the other one long strike and one short one.

The reason for the difference between the stamped part number and the on-box part number is that the 359937 consisted of the pan + gasket set. So, 359937 was the part number for a package containing those two parts. I think that some later boxes did not contain the gasket set but they still used the 359937 on-box part number.

It might not be a PRODUCTION Corvette pan. However, based upon the front seal radius, it cannot be a 1975+ SERVICE GM #359937.

If it's not a 359937 and it's not a PRODUCTION Corvette pan, then about the only thing it can be is a SERVICE GM #3789629 manufactured sometime between 1962 and 1976. I don't think that any passenger car pan ever used a "trap door" design.

This pan might not be correct with respect to every nuance of configuration. However, it should work perfectly for your application.

Just measured my newer service pan and it measured 2 7/16" vs the 2 3/16" on the one you have. Since it looks like mine good chance it is an older service item.

I had a pan blasted once, outside only. Never again. No matter how I cleaned it, even had it boiled at the machine shop, after it dried and I banged it on the bench I could wipe my hand in it and pick up grit. The stuff gets between the welded baffles and the pan and comes out sooner or later. I didn't have a source for sonic cleaning. I just bought a new pan.
