I guess my post offended some members. I thought thats what this website was for the sharing of information and opinions about corvettes. I am looking at several cars and just wanted some opinions on some stamp pads on some cars that are forsale. Wasnt looking for a written guarantee just some opinions. I guess from what I see that seems like that what the function of the DB is or should be.

Quality of the picture makes anything other than a guess difficult if not impossible. You can hire people to look at cars if you are serious about purchase, not really the function of this DB.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: L72 Pad stamp thoughts
Here we have a young guy (32 according to his profile) that joined in the last year. I am going out on a limb here, but I am guessing this is his first vintage Corvette purchase since his profile shows he owns none. He is asking for an opinion, similar to an opinion that is requested all the time here, that will help him make a better informed decision and both responses so far serve little purpose than to bust his chops. Sure his pictures are bad, but how about offering something productive to someone that represents the future of this organization rather than run him off to a place where people will be willing to help him like CF. Once he goes there they will be all over him telling him why NCRS is not worth being a part of.
Matthew, there are a ton of folks here who will help you out, and far more knowledgeable than anywhere else you will go, but you definitely need higher res photos. I am with you, if you can narrow your options down to one or two that you are prepared to pull the trigger on that is the time to pay someone to confirm that it is what you think it is, or very possibly have a local NCRS member inspect for free.
Good luck. I have a 66 L-72 car and will be happy to share anything I can with you. Send me a PM anytime you like.- Top

Re: L72 Pad stamp thoughts
Ditto to the above comments.
Get them out there and in front of us, there are more of the 427's out there today than what left St Louis and if you buy a bad one, its like throwing 20k easy out the window when you find out.- Top

Re: L72 Pad stamp thoughts
Hi Matt,
I hope you stick around, lots of good info here. I would recommend searching the archives for stamp pad info as well to help educate yourself. In the archive you will see a lot of correct pads as well as some examples of what is not correct.
I would also highly recommend getting involved in the judging process as an Observer Judge (OJ) as often as possible. No experience is needed and you will learn more than you can probably absorb (speaking for myself anyway). If you OJ with the mechanical section, you can ask the team judges what they did or did not like with a given pad and really start to get a feel for what is or is not original.
Good luck,
Joel- Top

Re: L72 Pad stamp thoughts
I guess I see it differently- guessing at stamp pads on-line is fun and educational, but it can lead to serious consequences if a person were to purchase a car based on a 'thumbs up' vote here, which later turns out to be a re-stamp or a clone car.
I think Al Grenning makes that part of his presentation on stamp pads by throwing in a ringer or two that fools almost all of the people almost all of the time.
Photos of pads have limited value.- Top

Re: L72 Pad stamp thoughts
I would never spend that kind of money based on opinions. I value the knowledge that I learn from many of you and am trying to learn as much as I can about these cars before I jump into anything. I learn something everyday about these cars.- Top
