    Douglas,

The GM service replacement spring I've seen have gray paint over most surfaces. Definitely not black paint.

Here is a picture of a replacement spring I purchased when at Carlisle back in the eighties for my 67. The car ride height is very good with this spring and I was surprised, the small sticker says made in Canada.

          Tim,

Is there any indication that that particular spring was originally sold by GM?

            Gary,

No indication it's a GM spring, what you see in the pic is all that's written on the spring.

Do you think it's possible there was a vendor who made service replacement springs for GM who put the SRI # on springs that GM sold over the counter?

              Gary -

I suppose anything was possible in terms of GM replacement springs, depending on where they sourced them and what the source's capabilities were, what 5140 steel strip stock was available from the mills, etc.; there may have been several sources for Service springs.

                Tim -

All original midyear rear springs supplied to St. Louis were made in Canada.
