    1956 Corvette Powerglide survey

OK, I am looking for some info regarding casting numbers for various parts for a 1956 Corvette Powerglide. I believe that 56 passenger car parts are the same (except for the extension), so I am interested in passenger car casting numbers too.

Just to get us all on the same page, take a look at the attached picture.
This points out the names for the major case parts.

I am looking for the casting numbers for the case and the housing. I also need the date codes. I suspect that the housing casting number changed during the 56 model year. Both of these numbers and date codes are easy to see from the underside of the car.

    Ed-
I saw your old post. I am also looking for casting numbers/dates, etc. All I have so far is 3719243 for torque converter housing, 3708134 for main case, and 3727024 for the tail housing. Sorry, no casting dates.

      I have a tailshaft housing (extention) I removed from a 56 in 1972. Cast 3726595.
There was no casting date, only a raised numeral 1 on the opposite side from the casting number

          Cecil-
That picture helps a lot. Do you have any other casting numbers for a 56 Powerglide?
          Thanks, Wayne

all 55-57 V8 powerglides after the first week of may 55 have the same numbers except for the tailshaft on the 56 and 57 corvette.

Good Job guys! Now who wants to volunteer to get Trans Usage Casting Number Chart on pg 194 of 56-57 Judging Manual corrected? If up to the task correct the 4 spd casting numbers also.

                    Dave-
I am in the process of drafting revisions to all of the C1 manuals, regarding transmissions in particular. I am working with Dave Heitzman, Tim Mickey and others. That is why I am asking all these questions. I'm trying to verify casting numbers with original Powerglides so that the TIMJG's are correct.
So, if there are any other casting numbers you all can send me, it would be appreciated.
                    Thanks, Wayne

if all these people are working on this project, how about posting the information that they have and where they got their information from. that way the forum members can verify or refute their findings. if forum members are giving you the information we should be able to see the results before the revisions are printed. many revisions end up only partially correct.

                        Re: 1956 Corvette Powerglide survey

Very good point John! That is exactly one of the big reasons I suggested in a Discussion Board post May 28, 2015 that we modify the Tech Info Manual & Judging Guide errata Sheets Board to allow anyone to contribute a post. While all the Judging Manuals keep improving there is a lot of incorrect and missing data (56-57) that could be easily corrected if open to all members input. The current system for corrections I believe is slow, cumbersome and outdated. While making that change would also suggest modifying the Judging Manual binder to a notebook format so new updated corrected pages could simply be inserted without having to republish the whole Manual which usually takes years. New dated pages would be sent to anyone who purchased the latest edition. To offset cost could charge a simple low annual subscription fee .

Okay- here is what I have for 1955, 1956 and 1957 Corvette Powerglide casting numbers:
                            Adapter plate: 3733293
Torque Converter housing: 3708188 Until May of 1955, then 3719243
                            Maincase: 3708143
                            Servo cover: 3709050
                            Throttle body: 3719251
                            Tail housing: 3707195 for 1955, 3726595 for 1956 and 1957
                            Dip stick cover: 3709096

These casting numbers have come from your input in this thread, from numbers I jotted down over the years, and looking through piles of PG's in junk yards. I have also documented a few PG's from Corvettes I have personally kept track of since they were new.

the information I am giving you on 55-57 powerglides is probably going to be more precise than if your team spent the next five years documenting items on 55-57 corvettes. the latest known v8 powerglide with a 3708188 converter housing has a date code E45, earliest known 3719243 converter housing has a E105 date code and the 3719243 converter housing remains thru the end of 57. 1955 corvette #299 came with the 3719243 converter housing dated E105 and a 3708134 main case dated E95. #299 was assembled at the end of may 1955. all 55 V8 powerglides in corvettes and 55-57 passenger cars have a tail housing with casting #3708241 and no date code. 56 and 57 corvette tailshafts have a #3726595 and no date codes. all 55-57 corvette and passenger cars have the same numbers on their side covers. an original corvette powerglide yoke will be measure 7" and have SPICER USA stamped on it.
